Finding a Stud Without a Stud Finder

  • Tap and listen. A dull sound means drywall only; a solid knock means you’ve hit wood.
  • Look near corners. There’s reliably a stud within a few inches of any inside or outside corner.
  • Check for surface texture. Faint dimples or hairline cracks in drywall often sit directly over a stud, from nails that have shifted slightly over time.
